Soundarya Lahari – 2 (Waves of Beauty of Devi)

The one who brings happiness and love to our lives, is beautiful for us.

The one who is beautiful to us invariably fills us with love and happiness.

She is Devi.

Soundarya Lahari is a set of 100 verses in reverence of Devi Tripurasundari composed by Jagatguru Adi Shankaracharya.

What sadhana can we do this Navaratri?

We can know her glories and seek her grace through the powerful Soundarya Lahari.

Last year in 2023, we worshipped her through Anandalahiri – waves of fullness (verses 1-41). This year we continue the worship through verses of Soundarya Lahari – waves of beauty (verses 42-100).

Even if you did not attend last year, a summary of the verses will be given and you will be able to appreciate Devi’s glories and worship her.

Who can enrol?

You are a devotee and you want to perform sadhana during Navaratri.

You are a practicing Hindu and/or are of Hindu origin.

You commit to attending all the days of course. Since the sankalpa is of sadhana for nine days, in case you miss one/two days, please catch up within the duration of Navaratri culminating in Dashara.

What will happen during the course?

Swamini Brahmaprajnananda will chant the verses and give an overview of the meaning. Listening with a clear sankalpa will bless you.

Can we chant?

You may chant along if you are familiar with the chants. There will be no additional time to repeat verses after her chant.

What does the sadhana involve?

You may chant Durga Sapatashloki or Lalita Sahasranama or any Devi mantra that you know an x number of times, during the nine days.

Which book to refer to?

Kindly purchase a copy of Saundarya Lahari by Swami Tapasyananda of Ramakrishna Math or any other translation.

Does this involve Srividya worship?

Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya embedded mantras, bijaksharas and many other aspects of SriVidya into the Saundarya Lahari for the masses. We will get an overview of the meaning (42-100 verses) and be introduced to chanting it such that we may take it further.

One of the Shankaracharya Peethams encourages  women gathering in groups and chanting this for blessings, even if they are not initiated into Srividya worship.

A few suggestions to make the most of the course –

·        For the week of Navaratri, try to reschedule your usual activities so that you have adequate time for the class and some additional time for sadhana of chanting some shlokas or mantras that you know.

·        Try to complete a light dinner a couple of hours before the class (This applies to people attending at IST)

·        If possible try to have a bath before the class. If not possible, please watch your face, hands and feet.

·        For women who have their menstrual periods it is ok to attend but not chant.

·        Do not eat or drink anything during the class except for water.

·        Try to not get up during the class

·        If you have limited privacy at your home please use headphones.

·        Do keep your video on because I need to see you while teaching. However, if you have intermittent connection you can keep the video off from time to time. You can look away if you have eye strain.

·        Please mute your mic and do not use the chat box during the class unless invited to. You can ask questions at the end of the class.

Thank you and let us make the most of Navaratri by offering our sadhana to Devi.
